Egyptology: from imaginary to the study of Antiquity

Egyptology is the only orientalist teaching in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. It is a major asset for the sciences of Antiquity. It also allows the transmission of values: an understanding of the oriental world through a prestigious ancient culture, while developing a spirit of tolerance. Courses at the University of Fribourg include political, cultural and religious history from the Predynastic to the Greco-Roman period, on topics as varied as civilisation, institutions, monuments, medicine, magic, animals (among others), in addition to the hieroglyphic Egyptian language. They also benefit from the collections of the Bible+Orient Museum.

This study is supported by the Fondation Gandur pour l'Art. We would like to express our sincere thanks to this foundation for its support for the teaching of Egyptology at the University of Fribourg.
